Are Veins and Fishers in my Natural Stone normal and why does my stone have a fiberglass backing?
Veining and Fishers are part of what gives many colors of natural stone their character and is not considered a defect. Elon Tile & Stone has many of our quarries place a fiber reinforced backing on the material which makes handling of the stone during installation easier and should be installed with a high-quality polymer modified white thinset.
My installer just installed my Natural Stone, and the color looks blotchy and is darker than my sample.
When natural stone is properly installed quite often the stone will absorb moisture from the setting materials and the stone will become dark or get blotchy spots on the surface. These dark areas will dry out within a few days depending on the humidity and temperature which the installation is exposed to. This will also happen to pieces which have been cut on wet saws.
Sealers & Cleaners
Do I need to seal Natural Stone?
All natural stone should be sealed regardless of type, finish or size
- Elon suggests Aquamix Sealers Choice for a natural finish and Aquamix Enrich n Seal to enhance the natural colors.
How do I know if my Natural Stone needs additional sealer?
Simply soak a paper towel in water and place or hold on the stone for one minute. After removing the paper towel, If the stone has darkened additional coats of sealer is needed.
What should I clean my Natural Stone with on a daily basis?
Not all cleaners are good for natural stone, many cleaners can damage the finish. Be sure to use a product which is PH neutral and Phosphate free similar to Aquamix Tile & Stone Cleaner.
Do I need to seal my Glazed Ceramic or Porcelain Tile?
Some surfaces of natural stone, glazed ceramic and polished porcelain may require pre-sealing prior to grouting to prevent the pigment of the grout from discoloring the surface.
- Many glazed surfaces of ceramic or porcelain tile will NOT accept a sealer, but it is very important to always seal your grout joints to prevent staining and moisture absorbent through the grout joint.
